Coraline
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Coraline is a very psychologically complex movie with many layers, and themes that contain a lot of emotional and thematic depth that keep watchers contemplating and theorizing. Despite it being an animation that seems like it should be for children, it has a large adult fanbase (myself included:D) that is a lot more deep and unsettling for children to be able to appreciate.
In this design, I centered my concept around the themes of control and manipulation, using composition and lighting to create an eerie, unsettling atmosphere that reflects the psychological tension of Coraline. I chose to place the scene within a dark, empty room in the Pink Palace setting to ground the viewer in the film’s world while creating a sense of unsettling isolation. The Coraline doll is suspended like a puppet, visually reinforcing the idea that she is being controlled by the Beldam, whose looming hand acts as the puppet master and dominant visual force. I used a green spotlight to establish the focal point and introduce a sickly, unnatural glow that enhances the unsettling tone while guiding the viewer’s eye toward the center of the composition. Overall, my design choices emphasize vulnerability, control, and the deceptive allure that is at the heart of the film’s narrative.

IDEATION
To reflect the film’s thematic depth, I brainstormed its core themes, tones, and recurring motifs before developing concept directions:
Themes: Curiosity | Control | Contrast between comfort and danger | Temptation | Deception | Self-discovery | Reality vs Illusion | False perfection | Manipulation | Loneliness and Belonging | Imperfect love | Predatory nurturing | Freedom vs captivity
Tone: eerie | childlike curiosity + subtle unease | unsettling
Recurring and/or Significant Motifs:
