ParaNorman

ABOUT THE PROJECT

In this poster design for ParaNorman, I wanted to capture the film’s playful yet spooky tone by drawing inspiration from the vibrant, illustrated aesthetic used within the movie that mimics zombie graphic novel illustrations. The design emphasizes bold color, graphic contrast, and stylized imagery to reflect this feeling of a zombie graphic novel while maintaining a clear focal point on the protagonist. In the background of the main graphic is a darker, more subdued scene that references the film’s climax of Norman’s confrontation with Agatha. By making the background more subtle and subdued, the foreground imagery is able to pop while still subtly communicating the larger narrative at hand.

IDEATION

Below are brainstorms of themes, tone, and visual strategy during early conceptual development:

Themes: Courage in the face of fear | Misunderstood outsiders | Fear vs empathy | Adventure and discovery | Misjudgment and prejudice | Normal vs abnormal

Tone: heartfelt | bittersweet | eerie but approachable | playfully spooky

Visual Strategy:

  • High contrast through vibrancy — having more vibrant, saturated colors mimic the bold, graphic style of zombie-themed illustrations and allow select elements to stand out more.

  • Subdued background imagery — having texture in the background makes the composition not feel too static, and contains deeper meaning that adds to the poster’s narrative without taking away from the central focus.

  • Lighting emphasis — glowing highlights draw attention to the central image and can suggest a kind of supernatural energy.
